The Doha Metro Design has been selected to receive the coveted iF Design Excellence Award as well as red dot design award.
Kinki Sharyo has been honored with both iF “DESIGN EXCELLENCE” Award and reddot design award for the Doha Metro Train design.
These awards testify to the high quality of the design of our in-house design section.
The Doha metro train was designed by Kinki Sharyo in collaboration with the German Design House TRICON Design AG. for The Qatar Railways Company as part of a consortium that includes Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Thales and Hitachi.
The Exterior and the interior design were carefully developed to reflect aesthetic elements present in the traditional Architecture and Crafts of Qatar. As such they reflect the cultural identity of the people of Qatar and Doha.
The Exterior design was personally selected by the Emir of Qatar. The Arabian mare was the inspiration for the frontend design of the Doha Metro vehicles. Using this image as an inspiration, it expresses the speed of the trains and the intelligence of their driverless system. The side design of the exterior presents aesthetics never seen before in a metro train. The standard rectangular format of the side windows has been discarded in favor of a completely new curved shape. This new design give the train a unique look that extends the dynamism of the front to the entire length of the train. The coloring pattern was inspired by the theme of the Metro Stations (Vaulted Spaces) which is part of the corporate image of Doha Metro. The colors were inspired in elements of the local environment.
The interior layout was defined with a deep respect for the social values present in the Qatari community. The interior design is divided in 3 dedicated areas that cater to different groups of customers.
1. The Gold Class which interior is inspired in the traditional Qatari Majlis reception room. It provides excellent comfort and convenience offering unobstructed access to every seat. This area provides service for passengers that seek a higher level of luxury and comfort.
2. The Family Class which provides a special area for women & children. Its layout includes special Family Seats that can be used by children or adults.
3. The standard class which has a side bench arrangement for a spacious interior.
All areas were carefully designed to provide safety and comfort. All areas are equipped with big screens that display information, entertainment and a dynamic route map for the passengers.
The first phase for the Doha Metro project will see the Red, Gold and green lines opening in 2019, with 37 stations. These lines will have the initial capacity to carry more than 8000 passengers per hour per direction on each line.
